The End of the Road for Cycle News Magazine
Another Classic Cycle News Cover
Cycle News Magazine is the latest casualty in the motorcycle industry. It is expected today that the company will officially announce that they are ceasing publication.
WOW, is all I can say. For those of us who follow the industry and racing, Cycle News has always been considered the go-to source for information. It has also been the training grounds for many of the current editors in the industry. Many aspiring writers, including myself, have been given their first writing opportunities on the pages of Cycle News.
News has been floating around for some time that things have been bad at CN, including the fact that they have not been paying their regular contributing editors, some for nearly a year. Those individuals will be hard hit by the news. Many of them have been caught in the position of still wanting to write and contribute, but at the same time being concerned about not getting paid.
It is a sad state of affairs and will leave a significant void in the industry. The Cycle News staffers have always been some of the nicest and most accessible people in the industry. Before the explosive growth in the electronic world, the weekly newspaper style production of CN was always the fastest way for information to travel. They always found room for editorial content that the other hard copy magazines would overlook. One of the best examples of that was a commitment to dirt track race coverage along with trials competition.
Of course what is dearest to most of us has been Cycle News’ commitment to local and regional race events. I will never forget the first time my name appeared in race results. Thanks to the efforts of someone who wanted to write a race report for our local series, I was able to see my name just a few pages away from my heroes. Just a little glory via association.
Thank you Cycle News
