Race Report
2010 Can-Am Unadilla GNCC
Team Off Camber Racing/Yamaha/Fastway/Klim/DRD
Mandi Mastin
The Off-Camber, Pro-Moto Billet/Fastway Performance, Klim Gear, Dubach Racing Development, Rekluse Clutch, Yamaha Race Team headed to the race the 10th round of the GNCC Series, in New Berlin, New York and the legendary Unadilla Motocross Track. The surrounding area is absolutely beautiful and the track is a field of dreams for motocross and off-road lovers. Once again, it rained just before the race, but this time the track needed the rain, since it was very dusty on Saturday for the Quad race. The little bit of rain made the already rough and wide open track also very slippery, especially a nasty railroad tie section that the track crew added just to be extra nasty! The whole Team had been racing throughout the GNCC Summer Break and were looking forward to returning to the GNCC Series, the day was not the best for most of the Team, but everyone was able to maintain the position in the Overall points for the year end Championship.
Amanda Mastin secured her 10th National Enduro Championship over the break and has been working hard to get ready for the ISDE in Mexico. Amanda got her first holeshot of the year and was excited to finally have a good start. Amanda rode the first lap with Maria Forsberg, who was pushing hard on the motocross friendly track. As Amanda came onto the actual motocross track she said that Shelby Rolan went around her like she was standing still. Shelby has been riding a lot of moto lately and it looks like her efforts have paid off. Amanda pushed on, but was not able to make the time up on Shelby. Mandi finished 4th in the Class, allowing Leeann Bange to take 3rd in the Class by only a few seconds over Mandi. Maria finished 1st in the class and Shelby was 2nd. Amanda is still in 2nd place behind Maria.
XC1 Pro Eric Bailey is still fighting an injury from the Somerset GNCC. Eric had went down in the rocks and badly injured his elbow. Eric has been racing over the Summer Break, in Arizona and lately in New York, trying to strength his elbow. Eric has been close all year for the holeshot award and finally in Unadilla Eric nailed the holeshot and was given $250.00 from MotorcycleUSA.com for his efforts. Eric had been riding with Nate Kanney for the last two weeks and Nate commented that Eric should wear a helmet cam backwards, because that would give the best view of the starts. Congrats to Eric and a big thanks to MotorcycleUSA.com for the support. Eric struggled all day to stay with the leaders and was not comfortable on the wide open course. Eric finished 15th in the Class and a very impressive 25th Overall for the day. Eric is looking forward to the next round, where the Series gets back to a more off-road course with mud, trees, downed logs and not so much motocross track. Eric is currently holding on to 11th in the Class.
Chase Bishop had a horrible start in the Open A class. His bike would not fire and he was dead last off the line. Chase was playing catch up on the first lap and had a huge get-off, breaking his visor on his helmet and ringing his bell pretty good. Chase pushed forward and finished 11th in the Class and 58th Overall for the day. Chase is still sitting comfortably in 2nd for the Series Points and Jordan Ashburn has a solid lock on 1st. Chase, like Amanda won the Championship in Open A Class of the National Enduro Series. This is Chase’s first Championship in that Series and the Team is very proud of his efforts. Chase, like Eric is looking forward to Tennessee, which is good off-road country and very close to his home.
Rudy Austin rode in the Vet B Class and was looking forward to getting back to his winning ways. Rudy got off to a bad start, but caught the leaders very quickly in the first mud hole. Rudy was leading the entire race with 2nd only seconds behind all day. Rudy, like Amanda had trouble with the railroad ties and went down, allowing 2nd to take the lead and the win. Rudy finished 2nd for the day and 116th Overall. Rudy is now 2nd in the Points Standings and is looking forward to racing all the remaining rounds and hopefully winning the Championship for the Team and for merry old England.
The Team brought local motocross pro, Brock Peterson to the Unadilla round to try his hand at his first venture into the woods and his first GNCC. Brock let nerves get to him and he had a terrible start. He was last off the gate and had to push to try to get back to the pack. Brock pitted after to laps and commented that “this stuff is crazy,” he had no idea just how fast GNCC racers can go through the trees. He felt like a hero on the moto track and a zero in any of the woods sections. Brock said he feels more comfortable 3 stories in the air, than he does 3 feet from the trees. Go figure! Brock finished 15th in the 250A Class and 152nd Overall. Not bad for his first real woods race. Brock had an awesome time and is looking forward to doing another off-road race and he left with a whole new respect for the other side of off-road racing.
