2010 Score Baja 1000 – Update finish
Happy Thanksgiving 🙂 I am home recuperating from my adventure to La Paz. I have tons of stories to tell, but for the moment I am still just trying to decompress from the whole trip.
Here is the short version: We go to Ensenada last Monday to help out and cover the Bonanza Plumbing/ Factory KTM 7x team effort. While there I meet Talya Dodson who is attempting to solo the race. I spend a couple of days helping her prep and dial in her KTM 530xcw.
On race day the KTM drops out of the race early. It sounds like a broken skid plate pinched the line on the external oil cooler and slowly starved the motor for oil.The team decides to pack up and head home, but I figure there is no real hurry so I unload my dual sport bike and hang out at El Crucero all day. This is at about race mile 340 of 1060.
At about 4pm Talya comes through. I explain what is up with the 7x and she says “so uh… you want to go for a ride..?” I think, hey why not? I grab my backpack and take off with her. From there we rode 36 hours straight to arrive at La Paz at 1:30 am Sat. morning. It was quite the experience. Neither me nor my bike were particularly prepared to ride the race course, but I had no issues except one flat tire. I rode about 18 hours in the dark with a stock headlight. My poor air filter went 1000 miles without change on that trip. But it all went well.
So I am finally back home getting rested up and will get the whole story down on paper in the next few days. Lots of great experiences – Chilly
Talya and I take a break near El Medano during our second night of riding
Talya crossed the finish around 1:28am on Saturday. Great job! They are in La Paz resting up. Chilly’s gear came back Friday, so he is without a laptop. Look for the adventure to be posted soon. In the mean time here a couple of post race pics – Neena

La Paz - not such a bad spot to rest and recuperate
