Colton Udall and Jeff Kargola Take San Felipe
For the second year in a row Colton and “Ox” show that they have what it takes to bring home an overall win in Baja.
The day started with lots of anticipation of the race ahead. With strong teams from Honda, KTM and Kawasaki everyone wondered if this was going to be the day for the Orange bikes, the day they could put the “Kan’t Take Mexico” rap behind them. But it was not to be.
Honda A team rider Kendall Norman lead off the line for the fast guys. KTM’s Kurt Caselli was right behind and quickly caught Kendall’s dust. At the 30 mile mark Kurt handed the bike to Mexican native Ivan Ramirez who again took off in hot pursuit of Norman. Ivan was battling back and forth with Kendall around mile 45 when the motor on the KTM 450sx-f decided to let go.
Having lost his pursuers, Kendall looked in good shape. But he too would find his day coming to an abrupt end. A stick in the radiator is apparently the culprit. The Honda lost its’ coolant, leaving Kendall sitting in the desert.
Steady rides from the Honda B riders, Colton and Ox, were all that were needed for them to cruise to a second consecutive San Felipe 250 victory. Although they were not without some challenge. The THR Kawasaki of Esposito, Hengeveld and Garrison would push the Honda team all the way to the finish.
With the loss of the other teams the THR Kawasaki came home in second overall, leaving the rest of the field far behind. I have not seen the rest of the results yet as we just got back to town. The 30 class bike of Francisco Septian and Jason Trubey was very strong towards the finish.
The perennial class 40 winning bike of Jeff Kaplan was down early with the injury to Louie Franco. He reportedly suffered a broken back and collar bone and has been flown to UCSD medical center in San Diego. I believe another class 40 rider, Joey Lane, was also transported with him.
So that is all the news for the moment. I have tons of pictures to load later. For now here is a quick raw clip of Ox as he got off the bike at mile 170 to hand off to Colton for the finish.
