2011 NORRA Mexican 1000 – We Finish In La Paz!
We are Here!
Wow what a trip it has been, we finished the 2011 Mexican 1000, not without some issues, but we are here never the less. I will write it all up later, but here is the short version:
Day 1 – I am first bike off the line. I know right away that we did not have enough gearing. But we stayed in the lead all day, never even saw another bike. Of the three tests, I won the first and Davey won the third one. I think I was second in the second test.
Day 2 – We get up to see that we have a 15 minute lead on the next bike. We ran the bike pretty hard on the first day, but being in the lead we just decided to go for it, no sense not trying to win it all. I lose some time in the first section when I ran out of gas. Davey takes off for the long Scorpion Bay loop and ends up seizing the bike about half way through. I ride the chase bike out and tow him 100 miles in the dark to Insurgentes.
Day 3 – Neena catches up with us after a long night of waiting for us in Loreto. We do a quick top end of the 250 KTM and head out for the second test. Bike runs great and we almost get another test win. We arrive at the finish in Loreto about 3pm. It was plenty warm and we were both glad to get swim in the ocean.
Basically we just ran the bike too hard trying to keep ahead of the swarm of Honda XR600’s behind us. The handling and suspension were awesome, Javier at Trail Tricks gave us a great package. Be both had a blast on the bike, easily forgetting that it is 20 years old. We are in La Paz spending most of the day on the beach, getting ready to head home in the morning.
