2011 Baja 500 pre-run on the new "Summit"
I have been down following the guys around as they get ready to race the SCORE Baja 500 this weekend. In the pic you can see the new summit section that has been causing so much commotion over the past week. I went out to investigate it myself yesterday and had the opportunity to watch a number of people come down it. It is a little scary because the base is so soft that you pretty much just slide all the way down. But none of the bikes or trucks I saw had any real issue with it.
Anyway the word today is that the organizers have decided to reroute the section to cut out the new part. So everyone has had to rush back out this morning to learn the revised route before race day.
All the JCR Honda crew is looking good. Kendall Norman and David Kamo will be riding the summit. They will be testing the race bikes later today. Ivan Ramirez will be testing his KTM 450sxf today also. He has just returned from a Mexican National Enduro in Toluca Mx. He has had a busy week and will just get his first outing on the bike with the KTM “special” motor today.
I have been out riding with the 400x crew of Jeff Kaplan, Ronnie Wilson and Brian Campbell. They look strong for the class 40 win. There are two very strong teams in class 30 also. I don’t have it all figured out who is on what team, I think one is Franciso Septian, Scott Meyers, Jason Trueby and Jim Oneal.
The weather has been awesome, not to hot, just comfortable for riding, even down in the low desert. I have a bunch of video but need a better internet connection to get it loaded, maybe Thursday.
Almost forgot; in the pic with David Fry, one of the guys in the background broke his ankle in a sandwash coming off the summit. He spent the night out in the dez and has just made his way to the Baja Pit with some help of another group of riders. He is a little worse for wear, but did ride out with some assistance. David Kamo was the first guy to him yesterday morning, and was sure he had encountered a dead guy, but he was just really dehydrated. I am not quite sure of the whole story, because the rider was not alone, he had some friends with him, but apparently they had ridden out in the morning and not returned yet.
