Chilly’s Blog – My Mind is a Raging Torrent… (update)
My mind is a raging torrent flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a
waterfall of creative alternatives– Hedley Lammar, Blazing Saddles
Honestly, I don’t know what made me think of that particular quote today, but I felt compelled to share it, so there you go.
We are getting ready to go racing this weekend. I wanted to race the 2012 450xc-w, but the forks are just way to soft to tackle a National Hare & Hound. I think they are going to have to go up two spring rates to get them in the ball park. The valving is very supple, but they blow through the stroke pretty quick at any speed.
So, out comes the 07 450xc race bike. I have only had it out once this year for a trail ride. So it needed a full inspection and carb clean. This will be the first race since we put the cam in it, so far it is feeling pretty racey so we will see how it goes.
I talked with David Kamo yesterday. He is going to race the Hare and Hound on the JCR Honda. It will be his first chance at a true dez race on the bike, so he is excited to see how it does. Due to his injured fingers, they decided a couple of hours in the desert would be better than the 24 hours at Glen Helen. So Colton will be doing that race without him. Kendall and Quinn will also be out at the National.
After a long summer break everyone is anxious to get out and have a good race. It is getting to that point in the season where riders have to think about next year. With Caselli dominating the series, few riders have had a chance to really shine. So look for a big effort from everyone, should make for some good racing. Other than Kurt, I don’t think there is a single desert racer who has a ride secured for 2012 yet.
David Kamo he has been incommunicado for a while because his house got struck by lighting a couple of weeks ago. It killed every electronic device in the house, all the computers and TVs.
It is getting into the fall busy season. We race this weekend, then have a district enduro the following Sunday. I think I am leading the points for the Vet A class, so I really want to try and get that wrapped up. The District 37 enduro series has had a very successful year. Look for even more new stuff for the 2012 season. Long live the timekeepers!
After that it is back to Mexico. I will be helping lead an industry ride in a couple of weeks. Then it will be just about time to start getting ready for the Baja 1000. It looks like there will be no KTM team this year. I hate to see that, but they figure there is just too much going on to do it right. But KTM might make a serious effort for next season.
So that leaves the THR Kawasaki as the biggest threat to the JCR Honda squad. Looking to rebound from the heartbreaking loss of 2009, look for Robby Bell, Shane Esposito, Steve Hengeveld, David Pearson and Bobby Garrison to ride a Precision Concepts prepared KX450. It looks like Bonanza Plumbing has signed on as the title sponsor for the team, but I am not sure if the actual deal has been finalized yet. So stay tuned.
Update: Joe B wrote in and wanted me to share the information on the Bultacto picture I used in the piece. It is racer Marcel Weirtz. Here is another pic of an event at New Philadelphis, Ohio, showing Roger DeCoster (Jawa CZ) leading Marcel Weirtz (Bultaco). Both riders, from Belgium, were competing in Inter-Am series of Moto-Cross events across the USA.
BTW: I am off to meet RD & RD, Decoster and Dungey this morning, so I will have an interview up maybe on Monday.
