Chilly’s Tecate Hare Scrambles Race Report
2011 Tecate Hare Scrambles
Chilly's 1991 KTM 250exc at Tecate Hare Scrambles
Chilly White – 5th Place, -30 class
As for me, I decided to do something a little different. I have been working on my 1991 KTM 250 a little more. It is running so good that I decided to race it. The only thing holding me back had been the horrific clutch pull, but a new cable and ASV perch has cured that. Not wanting to beat my bike up too much, I just wanted to get it out in race conditions and see how it would perform.
I got a pretty poor start so I spent most of the first ten miles in traffic. I made a few good passes and one bad one. The bike felt very good. I was a little tall with the gearing (13/48), so I had to do more clutch work than I really wanted, but the motor response was pretty good. Just as traffic as starting to sort out a bit, I realized my rear brake was going away. I had just built a new system based on 2003 components I had in the shop and I think the master cylinder was bad. So the result was that I had to ride the majority of the race with no rear brake.
About mid point in the race I also had to stop to adjust the clutch cable. By the second loop I was mostly riding on my own. Once I got settled down a little, I was doing ok without the rear brake. I had to back off the pace just a bit, but that let me get in a nice trail ride rhythm for the rest of the day. Still my hands got very sore from having to work the clutch and front brake so much.
I keep telling people how good this bike is. It amazes me every time I ride it. It is fast, handles well and Trail Tricks suspension is great. If I would have had a little better prep work into it for the event, I could have ridden it at nearly full race pace. I have a few things to do, like get the brake sorted out and then I am going to race it again next week at the Johnny Campbell GP at the Ranch.
