With Baja, getting ready for Romaniacs and what ever else it is that I do, I am getting a little bit behind on my garage duties. Our 250xcw build project is in full swing, so I will be following up on that just as soon as I am back from Romania.
Next up will be facelift for my 2003 KTM 450exc. This was my 2002 Czech ISDE bike. It has been a great friend for many years. It started life as a 400. That was still one of the ISDE displacement classes back then. Later it got a 450 conversion. So it is a long stroke 450 with a 525sx cam. It also has the light weight 2003 crank and a Rekluse Z-start Pro model clutch. This may be the best all around RFS motor that I have ever had.
Sadly, over the years the frame has not fared so well. It has been welded on a few times. Now it has stretched so much that the lower part of the radiators rub on the frame. I tried to replace the radiators, but the frame has stretched so much that new ones will not fit. The stock ones have sort of stretched to match the frame.
For a many years now this bike has just sat around as a spare. I have been afraid to ride it too hard for fear of breaking it. That means that much of the bike, like the motor, is actually fairly fresh. I have wanted to fix it up, perhaps put it into a 2004 frame (small swingarm bolt diameter), but never ran across all the parts. As luck would have it, my friends over at Damaged Goods came up with this near new 2003 frame. What a find! So I have it and a new OEM exhaust also. Now all I need to do is swap parts and I will have a fresh 450 again.
