I didn’t have the best of times at X Games and that was disappointing because it’s the biggest EnduroCross race of the season. I’ve been struggling with my starts this year and that’s something that we need to work on. When you’re not starting well out of the gate it makes the race very, very tough.
When I get my starts working well things will look better because I’m still getting around the track at good speeds. I was very fast in practice over in LA and everything with the bike was feeling good, I was sure I was going be up front. Then I had a problem at the start so I had to battle hard to finish in fourth place.
It’s a bummer not to finish on the podium and to miss out on picking up another medal at X Games. The positive side of things is that I’m still leading the championship. We are not yet at the halfway point of the season so there’s still plenty of races to come. I’m looking forward to these opportunities to work on a new tactic for starting each race.
The next race of the EnduroCross season is not until September so I’m using this time to try out something new, something that I think will be a lot of fun. I’m travelling over to Argentina to take part in a six-day Enduro Rally Raid called the Desafío Litoral.
I’m lucky that I live close to four-time Dakar Rally champion Cyril Despres and we have been out doing some riding together. This is going to be my first ever rally so it’s something completely different from what I’m used to. I think it’s going to be a cool experience.
The fact that this race is happening during the summer break in the EnduroCross season has given me the perfect opportunity to try out something new. Also having my buddy, Cyril, advising me about everything involved with rally raid is a great help. I appreciate Cyril taking the time to help me and we’re both looking forward to having plenty of fun during the trip to Argentina.
Navigating using a roadbook is totally new to me and at the moment I have no clue, it’s something I’m going to have to learn pretty quick! I rode about 50km on Cyril’s KTM 450 practice bike a few weeks ago and that’s pretty much my only experience of riding the machine I will use in Argentina. So many aspects of this adventure will be things that are new to me but my focus in Argentina will be just to enjoy the experience.
