Baja Celebration Party
Everyone had a great time this past Saturday at the Baja celebration party. The primary focus of the event was to commemorate the ride by Dave Ekins and Bill Robertson Jr down the length of Baja in 1962 on Honda 250 scramblers. There was a presentation hosted by Tom White that included photos and narration by Dave, recounting the events of the ride.
It was a very remarkable accomplishment. It was interesting to hear some of the details of the ride. As with anything like this, it was not without its trials. At one point the riders got lost at night in the fog near Laguna San Ignacio. They found themselves riding in a circle and had no choice but to wait until day break to regain their direction. Like many similar stories, just that fact that they arrived in La Paz relatively unharmed seems like a minor miracle.
There were a wide variety of vintage Baja race bikes on display. The 1994 race winning Kawasaki KX500 was one of the most impressive, partially due to the incredible light package. Chuck Miller’s Honda XR600 with fairing was also a sight to see. Ron Bishop had a wide array of memorabilia from his archive on display also.
Chris and Patty Blais chose the event to draw the winner of the Chris Blais Dakar rally bike raffle. Congratulations winner to Kelly Huffman of Arlington Texas. Apparently Kelly was one of a number of ticket holders who showed true support by returning multiple times to purchase more tickets as his finances allowed. Patty thought it was very fitting that he was the winner.
The event was capped off by an autograph signing that included some of the more prominent legends in attendance including; Ron Bishop, Roger De Coster, Brian Farnsworth, Tom White, Chuck Miller, Mary McGee, Gunner Lindstrom, Derrick Paiement, Johnny Campbell and Dave Ekins.
