Befurious.com is reporting that word of the mutual split between Gas Gas and Ivan Cervantes is imminent.
After coming to his native brand two years ago, there has been little to celebrate for the two parties. Ivan initially set out to compete on the two stroke model but found no success with it. He then switched to the Yamaha based EC450.
At the time, Gas Gas did not even offer this model in the line up. I imagine they had to to a tremendous amount of work to make the 450 race worthy. Even so, as the new 2t models have debuted, the 450 still features the old style chassis design. I have wondered how the bike could possibly be competitive against the other factory bikes in the EWC. Gas Gas is not known for shedding weight on their models. As the Yamaha motor is somewhat heavy to begin with, I would estimate this at a 270lb bike. It is hard to imagine that as a world beater.
Interestingly, I just looked through the news on the GG Spain website. There is hardly a word about Cervantes anywhere on it. Well, we hope the best for both parties and whatever they decide to do.
