It is hard to believe, that for all the models KTM produces, they have not had a true 450cc off road race bike in their lineup for the last three years. By their own definition, they have had enduro bikes and motocrossers, but not a true off road racer. Just look at the 450’s their own race team has run, all sx-f models.
Now I guess this is a little bit misleading. Once the old twin cam 450sx-f gained a 5th gear back in 2010, it was really the same bike as the last of the 450xc-f’s (2009). I guess the idea was that there was not enough differences to justify two separate models, so the xc-f was discontinued.
Never fear, the dedicated cross country race bike is back! This is not some warmed over enduro bike, it is the real deal for the serious racer. The 2013 450xc-f is just one step removed from the much hyped Ryan Dungey replica. This is a very businesslike platform.
With so many KTM models floating around, it is understandable if you may have trouble keeping up with all of them. Here is a quick specification overview of the 2013 450xc-f:
Latest version of the KTM single cam motor that debuted in 2012 as the “Dungey Replica”
5 speed transmission
48mm WP Closed Chamber fork
Linkage rear shock
18” rear wheel with new 25mm axle
Comes with sidestand
sx-f style exhaust
2.4 gallon fuel tank
For reference, there are two other version of this motor in the KTM catalog; the 450sx-f and the 450xc-w. One is the full motocross bike and the other the enduro and dual sport platform. With the xc-f back, the family is now complete with a full off road race model.
So is this bike more enduro or motocrosser? By far, it is closest to the motocrosser. The chassis specifications are nearly identical with just a few changes. Riding it back to back with the 450xcw is a real revelation. This is a lean mean race bike.
