Today’s short special was won by David Casteu ahead of Olivier Pain, with Juan Pedrero finishing third behind the French duo. Cyril Despres finished 5th (at 04’07) and is this evening 3rd overall at 06’07 with team mate Ruben Faria now fourth at 13’34.
Cyril Despres – “Today was a good lesson in rally raid. You look at the road book and think ‘just 136 kilometres’ and for sure it went quickly. But in a section of fesh fesh the front wheel got stuck, I went over the bars and the bike landed on my leg. Luckily my Orthema knee brace took all the shock; otherwise I would have broken my leg for sure. I always knew that they were the Rolls Royce of knee protectors but today they really proved their worth. It just goes to show that in rally raid anything can happen and that it pays to be prepared.
Tomorrow we have the first really long special of the rally (455 kilometres), we have come into an area in Chile that I like to ride in and I start 5th on the road. All of that makes it the perfect occasion to push a little. So, if I’m feeling good on the bike tomorrow morning that is exactly what I will do. And if, for some inexplicable reason, I don’t feel particularly good on the bike I can wait another day. There’s still plenty of ‘keys’ left on this rally!”
