Stage 6 News Updates
– Casteu get started; The French Yamaha rider has just started today’s special, tackling the first 229 kilometres, followed by a 96-km neutralised zone, before the final 129 km against the clock. Behind Casteu, general standings leader Olivier Pain will try and maintain his lead, but will have to resist the ambitions of title holder Cyril Despres.
– After 45 km of the special stage, Alain Duclos has been at a standstill for a few minutes in a zone of dunes. He has been joined by Frank Verhoestraete, his team-mate in the Sherco team, as well as by the other rider on the team, British biker James West.
-A little more than half way through the first part of the day’s stage – after 131 kilometres to be precise – Paulo Gonçalves (Portugal/Husqvarna) provisionally leads the stage in front of Ruben Faria (Portugal/KTM) by 1’15”, Jordi Villadoms (Spain/Husqvarna) by 1’39” and Francisco Lopez (Chile/KTM) by 1’46”. The leading pair in the general standings, Olivier Pain and David Casteu, have so far lost 7’58” and 10’50” respectively to the stage leader. Cyril Despres is currently 14th, 5’43” behind Gonçlaves.
-Duclos moving again, the Frenchman spent a long time at a halt after 45 km. Two of his team-mates stopped as they passed him, but then set off again leaving him on his own. Duclos has finally managed to set off again and has currently covered 60 km of the special stage.
– Caselli showing some speed earlyin the day, Kurt looks to be running in the top five for the day with some fast split times. I am guessing that a combination of technical terrain and less navigation will allow Kurt to really show his desert experience. I can’t help but wonder how Kurt and Cyril are getting along together. Is Cyril showing Kurt the ropes and planning to use him to help get the overall win, or is Kurt just left to more or less figure it out for himself? KTM has not been very clear about just who are the water carriers either. Does Kurt have one?
Kurt Caselli on stage 6 of the Dakar
-Yamahas are off the pace today, Pain and Casteu looking to lose their lead positions today. Gonclaves challenging for stage win. Despres and Chaleco quietly keeping leaders in sight. Johnny Campbell, Laia Sanz and Marc Guasch are running from 30-35th position.
WP7 -Top 15 riders into Check 7, top 5 are: Gonclaves, Chaleco, Faria, Caselli, Israel, Despres. Look for the Chileans to really make a push on this first stage in their home land.
WP9 – Chaleco, Faria, Caselli, Despres, Israel. Gonclaves has lost time stopping on course for a few minutes, assumed mechanical issue.
Finish – Chaleco looks to have the stage win. Seconds are ticking as Faria and Depres are in also. Everyone is watching to see Caselli’s time when he arrives.Kurt started way back, so he will be some time yet in arriving. It appears that Olivier Pain will keep the overall lead by just two minutes over Despres.
Other notables, Speedbrain Husky riders Barreda and Viladoms, seem way off the pace today, riding back around 20th position.
Caselli 4th! Kurt has arrived at the end of the stage in 4th place. Just 4 minutes behind the lead time of the day. Great ride Kurt!
