San Felipe 250 Pre-run Snapshots
We are live from Baja for the 2013 San Felipe 250. Yesterday and today I spent time out riding some of the new sections of the course. The northern loop, on the north side of highway 3, looks like it will be plenty of fun. Most of it has not been raced in a few years, so the whoops are light. There are a couple of fun gravel canyons along with a great sandy two track road towards the end. One big silt bed is starting to develop. There are 3 VCP’s in it, so the riders will have to ride right down it.
Today we ran the “sportsman only” section on the southern part of the course. This cuts about 40 miles off of the total distance. It is also probably the coolest section because there are not any trucks prerunning on it. It is nearly 10 miles of fun sand road through a great canyon and small mountain pass, back to the point where it joins back with the regular course.
Not too much in the way of news to report. Kendall Norman will not be riding solo. He is teamed with Ryan Abbatoye who will take a short section of the riding, something around 60 miles. This should make a formidable team. Ryan has lots of WORCS experience and preran with Robby Bell some last season.
There is a team here at the hotel who has discovered a problem with the motor on their 450 KTM. Apparently the mechanic left a paper shop towel in the motor! Needless to say it is a big problem. The motor is full of little wads of oil soaked paper. They are everywhere; in the filter, screens, oil pump, side case, everywhere. The team is working to flush as much out as possible. But I can’t imagine they can get all the little oil passages cleaned out. I have offered to sell them my 450xc, they just have to drive to San Diego to get it.
Here are a few snapshots I have taken along the way.
