Chilly’s Blog – Doctor, It Hurts When I ……
For the last six days it has hurt when I do almost anything. Really, how can this possibly be? I thought I was being so careful. It is just seven days until we start Romaniacs and I have pulled a muscle in my back and put myself in some real pain. Last Wednesday I was at the track riding and it just happened. I don’t even know when or how. I did something and a lap or so later realized my back hurt.
I have been so careful to make sure I did not get injured before Romania. I have skipped a number of races and really concentrated on low impact cardio exercises. But I think that was actually the root of it. While it happened on the motorcycle, I think it may have gotten it started on my bicycle. I had felt a couple of twinges in my back and I think they came from pedaling uphill while standing, pulling a very tall gear.
Nothing like a wide variety of aches and pains to make you feel old. As for my back, it typically has not been bad. But I had one major injury in 2005. It happened at a national enduro in New Jersey. In the last test I ran my bike into something that looked like a puddle, but was really a quicksand hole. The bike sank down past the axles.
Worse yet, it was in a rut that was really more like a hole. I wasn’t the first one in this mire. It left my seat at just about ground level. In trying to pull the bike out, I hurt my back. It was a terrible pain. But I was still stuck. So I had to extract the bike myself and still ride to the end of the race. It was one of my more painful days. When it was over, I still had to drive three days home by myself. Needless to say it was not the best of trips.
So it looks like I have now suffered a smaller injury in the same place. When I got up on Thursday morning, I was worried to see that I couldn’t stand straight up. Actually, I can stand up, but my torso seems to be tilted to the right from the waist up. I made my first ever visit to a Chiropractor. They got a little movement out of me, but not anything significant. It looks to be just a muscle issue.
I am trying every cure that I can right now. I am stretching, massaging, applying heat and using some very smelly Tiger Balm. The Chiro put me on the electro stimulus machine and that was the one thing that seemed to really help. I have purchased a small version of it and am using it twice a day. It certainly provides some nice relief.
The good news is that things are getting better each day. Yesterday I was able to really go out and walk. Prior to that I was confined to hobbling around the house. I can mostly stand and sit without too much pain. At this rate I will be like new by the end on the week, right? As for next week’s race, I am sure that as long as I can get by without too much lifting, I should be okay. Riding the Hobby course at Romaniacs is mostly like a super technical trail ride. Let’s hope I can keep it all together. I don’t really care too much about how it turns out. I just want to feel like I have ridden well and hopefully it won’t be in too much pain.
It always seems like a taboo subject for racers to talk about their pains and injuries. I guess they don’t want others to know, or maybe it is just about bucking up and taking your licks. I guess I don’t really consider myself that serious of a racer anymore, so you will just have to listen to me whine. :}
