I am in Pennsylvania today getting ready for tomorrow’s Rattlesnake National Enduro. I flew out yesterday to take part in KTM’s introduction of the 2014 off road models. It may not be a year of “all new”, but there are some nice updates to the line up.
The one all new model to the line is the 250xcfw which now gets the SXF style motor. Other updates include a new front brake master cylinder design and SX style bodywork. The two strokes get a new reed block and some top end massaging. We will get into more details on the new models next week.
Today we got to ride all of them on a short loop staged at the enduro. For me, it was the first time in a few years that I have been able to ride all the models back to back. It is fascinating to pick out the small differences in each. The short loop made it easy to jump from one bike to the next quickly and feel the variations.
For tomorrow’s race, I have decided to go with the old standard, the 250xcw 2T. When I started the day, I tried to keep an open mind as to which bike to choose for race day. That is what makes the testing so much fun, it has a purpose, to decide on the best race choice. For some reason today, the two stroke was just calling my name. I stayed away from the 300 some, because I just spent a week on it. The 200 felt really good, but the suspension was a tad soft for me. The 250 instantly felt just right. It will be interesting to see if I still feel the same way Sunday night.
The conditions for the race look nearly perfect. The weather is mild. There has been a hint of rain all day, but nothing more than a sprinkle materialized. The dirt is perfect. Hopefully it does not rain any more.
I probably will not get a post out tomorrow, as we have to drive straight back to Pittsburgh for flight early the next day. But stay tuned next week for my race report and more details on the new bikes.
