Second Look – Klim Dakar Pro Jersey
Six Days – One Jersey
I first got the new Dakar Pro jersey during the winter. I wore it on a winter time Baja trip, the Hell Ride. I liked the new design, but I found it a bit stiff. It had a distinct rigid feel. As it was winter time, I was also wearing a jacket the entire trip, so I wasn’t really putting the jersey to test in its own element, as a mild weather jacket substitute.
After that trip, I think the Dakar jersey got stuffed towards the back of the gear pile and I sort of forgot about it. Last week as I was preparing for a week long back pack trip to Baja, I stumbled across it and figured it might be the best choice for the season. As it turned out, we had a bit of everything for the ride; sun, rain, hail and fog. By the time I returned home I had a new found appreciation for the Dakar Pro.
The design makes a great all weather choice. The body vents quite well. The padded sleeves are a bit warmer, but not too bad. Overall it suits a wide range of temperatures.
The lightweight armored sleeves work well against the brush. We rode a couple of very overgrown trails and the protection was better than the average lightweight jacket would offer.
I love the breast pocket, perfect for glasses and phone. I do wish it had more of a slash cut design. Leave the zipper open and the contents will disappear quickly. I didn’t really use the included goggle chamois, I was afraid to open the pocket while riding, but I like the idea.
After a few washing’s the jersey is much softer feeling, it has lost that initial stiff, bulky feel. It is pretty comfortable.
For six days of sweat, rain and dust, it didn’t smell too bad. The lightweight material would be easy to wash and wear overnight if needed.
So far it shows every sign of durability, not showing the slightest amount of wear yet.
I think the Klim Dakar Pro jersey is going to become a more regular part of my kit.
