As I mentioned in our first ride of the 2014 KTM 450xc-f, one of my goals for long term testing is to see what we can do to make the race bike into an all around trail bike. I have a few more rides on the 450 now, mostly getting a little bit of track time in. I think I have the list of modifications just about sorted out for this project.
This is to be strictly a minimalist make over. We don’t want to lose the light weight feel of the xc-f. So the list is whittled down to just what I consider the bare necessities. Here is what I have so far:
Acerbis 11.5 litre tank to extend the fuel range
Stealthy 12oz flywheel weight to add a bit of mass
Baja Designs new smaller SII LED light, this will work on the stock 75w charging system
P3 skidplate and header guard
Fastway linkage guard
Fastway submount stabilizer
Best Dual Sport Bikes “grunt” exhaust flange
FMF 4.1 Powercore muffler
KTM Powerparts mapping switch
Dirt Tricks cooling fan & sprockets
I think the plan will be to do some of the modifications that effect power delivery in stages so that we can evaluate the benefit of each. The exhaust was already installed for our first ride review to help with the noise and add a sparky. I am off to Utah this week to do a little riding so that will be in interesting test for the big 450.
Here is a little more ride video from our first test.
