I have been doing a “throw back Thursday” (TBT) feature on the Enduro360 Facebook page for a little while now, but I figured I should just move it to the website. So let’s go back to 2002 and my first ISDE.
It was in the Czech Republic. Much of this race is just a blur now. It rained every day, I never took my jacket off. I was supposed to ride a Gas Gas, but the AMA had me entered in the wrong class. At the very last minute I ended up on a KTM 400exc.I literally picked the bike up from KTM, put mousses in it and rolled it into impound. I started the race with exactly 1 mile on the bike. It ran perfect for all six days and it still sits in my garage.
The Czech Six Days was very hard. Only half of the riders finished. So my bronze medal is still probably my proudest race accomplishment. The times were so fast on the first day that every single one of the Americans dropped time (except one). If anyone can tell me who that rider was, I will come up with something special as a prize for you, hint – you will never guess.
I was riding with two other experienced riders on my minute, one from the Swedish Army and the other from Denmark if I remember correct. When we rolled out of the first check one rider said “hey we have to go, the time for this check is really tight”. From that point on it was almost full race for the rest of the day. I actually ended up with pretty good time for the day just because I had that little warning and knew what the pace was going to be. We had pavement transfer sections that were it was almost impossible to stay on time. I remember splitting lanes back into town during rush hour traffic in the rain.
I rode on the Merced Dirt Riders club team with Kurt Wilcox and Derrick Merrill. Kurt was an odd coot, but as solid a six day rider as there ever was. Derrick left his helmet in the hotel one morning and drove 30 minutes back to get it. He started the day like 30 minutes late. It was the first year we used fuel mats. Derrick peed on one of them right in the middle of the pit. Worse yet, it was the pit that Neena, his wife Jill and Gunny were working, none were very happy. Oh, but it gets better, he took off out of the pit and roosted everyone, with the dirt he had just peed on. Ask Gunny about that one some time.
Basically I just remember being cold and tired most of the time. But the little 400 was perfect for the slick conditions. There were many special tests were riders were stuck in the middle of the test and could not get out. I did lots of pushing that year.
