For some reason, Neena seems to think that she should get to go on vacation every year or so. I don’t know why, she gets to travel all over to motorcycle races; sleeping in the van, eating at exotic truck stops, top notch rest stops and such. But for some reason her idea of a good time is a warm beach and cold margarita. For all that Northern Baja offers, it really isn’t a lay on the beach kind of place most of the time.
As for me, I love the beach too, especially if there is plenty to look at. That will keep me entertained for a number of hours… but not quite a whole vacation worth. The solution is a riding vacation. But it can’t be one of those ” here is a lawn chair, why don’t you lay by the van in the desert until we get back from our ride” kind of thing. She just won’t buy that as a real vacation.
Months ago Sam Bird from Hawaii Rides on Oahu pitched me an idea about a trade. I guide him and his friend Mark Jefferies around Baja and in return they would put me up in Hawaii and take me riding. Now that is what I call a vacation! It is the best of everything, beaches, great food, selection of motorcycles and pedal bikes to ride.
I spent our first day on the WR250. After riding new fuel injected small thumpers, I kind of forgot what a pig the little Yammie is in the tight stuff. On the second day I got the KTM 200xcw with the trials tire. Now that is more like it, the perfect Hawaii bike.
Hawaii Rides offers mountain bike rentals, so I got to try out a couple of brand new bikes, the Santa Cruz Heckler 27.5 and the On One Fatty. It was pretty cool riding the fat bike right down the beach on the North Shore.
Now you get to through all my travel slides from the trip, enjoy.
