I was looking at this photo the other day. It doesn’t really show much. It took me a minute to put it in place, figure out what the scenario was. But when I remember, it gave me a great laugh.
This is in Texas, but I am not sure what year. I am still wearing MSR gear, so 2006 or 2007. My dad Gordon and I drove for what I believe was the first national of the season. I am riding my 2005 300exc. The race was okay. If I recall, it was the first race of the new enduro format and took a little bit to get used to. I don’t really remember how my day went, okay I guess.
But this photo was the highlight of the day. I was riding on the minute behind Ben Smith and Joey Giordano. They were both on the Christini 250x AWD bikes. Both were struggling a bit, but managed to stay ahead of me for the most part. I do remember one of them burying the bike in a tree or some bushes and I got by.
The last section of the day was pretty good. It was topped off by a big rocky gully climb right to the finish line. There were lots of spectators there watching and a number of riders stuck. What you see in the photo is me going up the climb. I pretty much nailed it, enough so that a number of people came up and commented on it after the race.
But that wasn’t even the best part. Teammates Ben and Joey collided into each other in the middle of the climb, ending up on the ground. I was able to pass both of them as they were recovering from the yard sale. That made the whole trip worth it!
