This past week was a full one. It started off with the Tecate Enduro, 100 miles of gnarly single track. From the race we packed up and headed even farther south to spend the week exploring trail around Cataviña. We rode until sunset every day, spending 6 out of 7 days riding hard.
Myself, Sam Bird and Mark Jefferies met up with Cameron Steele, Jimmy Sones, Walt Koch , Fred Sobke and Andy Bonin. Jimmy was looking to show us some of his old trails and maybe get us to help him figure out some new route ideas. Cameron was planning trails for his upcoming Desert Assassins Hell Ride.
With five full days in the area we rode almost every major trail in the vicinity; Camper Shell, Can & Spoon, Turkey Ranch, Rock Trail, Fred’s Tractor Trail, Cactus trail, Dead Cow and a number of others that don’t have names. Can & Spoon has sat vacant so long the trail didn’t want to show itself very readily.
We made it to Gonzaga Bay for one night. We also went out to Mission Santa Maria. It was a very technical ride but well worth it. We arrived only to realize we should have planned an entire day just for the mission area. Such is Baja, there is never enough time to see everything planned. Just leaves more to see next time.
We got skunked on a couple of new trail ideas, they need more research and planning. We did finish with one brand new route, all figured out and run in. But we will have to save that detail for another time too. Here are a few pics for you to enjoy.
