-Sam Sunderland withdrew after numerous problems and a crash in stage 4. “Hey! Thanks for all the kind words and the support I gave it my all, I got really dehydrated on day two after opening for 430kms perfect I made a navigation error in a river bed and headed down the wrong track then spoke with the organisation on the iritrack and they told me to go back in cap 130 to arrive back to the right track, it was a complete disaster with trees and bushes and jungle and a ravine and finally a fence and in 50 degrees I was on the limit. I spent two hours trying to get out and just cooked myself and the last two days haven’t been able to rehydrate even with a drip and have been having problems with vision and concentration day 4 I fell misjudging a fast turn and hurt my shoulder, x ray in the bivouac shows no fracture but we will see. Gutted to be heading home so soon thanks a lot for all the kind words and until next time”.
-Lone American Antonio Narino was also on the withdraw list at the start of stage 5 today.
Marc Coma – “It was a very tough stage. There was fesh-fesh all the time and in the fesh-fesh you cannot see the stones and it is not comfortable to ride. You are always having to pay attention. After 30 km I was at the front and opening the stage again. I tried to lead at a good pace and not take to many risks, because today was very tricky. At the end, I’m happy how the day was. It’s going to be very difficult to take time from Joan, but, you know, we have a lot of racing in front of us. There’s the second part of the rally and we’ll have two marathon stages. We will try like hell until the last day. We know that Joan is very fast and that he has a very high level, but we will try, for sure”.
