Gas Gas Workers Give KTM Cold Reception
“This Is Not Your House” Decry Workers
Spanish Employees Fear Plant Closing
as reported from Enduropro.com
Visitors from KTM received a “warm” reception yesterday when they arrived to tour the Gas Gas factory. Workers concerned about the fate of the plant and the threat of losing Spanish jobs demonstrated their frustrations with slogans and burning tires.
Gas Gas is now in full liquidation and the only real hope for survival would have to come from someone with deep pockets to keep the brand alive and resume production. While a number of potential buyers have shown interest, it appears that moving production to a different country would be likely with all.
There is a small group of dedicated workers within Gas Gas who have contributed their own efforts to keep sales and service channels open to support current customers. These workers have foregone their regular salaries and benefits to do so in hopes of keeping the brand viable for purchase.
KTM went to great lengths to distance themselves from the GG situation earlier this year when rumours floated of their interest. The mere fact that KTM issued a very high profile press release denying interest was enough to raise a few eye brows. The Trials market is one of the very few arenas that the Austrians have yet to enter. Gas Gas is not only a major manufacturer, but Spain is one of the major Trials markets too.
But, as in the purchase of Husqvarna where Stefan Pierer showed no inclination other than to maintain all production in Austria and those in Spain fear the same would happen with Gas Gas if KTM picked the company up via liquidation. Husky’s Italian production was halted and sold off with little consideration to the locals.
