Love the pics. Somewhat familiar area. We pre-ran from San Quintin to San Ignacio in 2000 before the Baja Dos Mil. I remember going to Francisquito to buy some gas.

I have not ridden the 2012 350xcf yet. We spent lots of time with the 2011 model and used the Sicass racing mapping switch on it. I really liked that bike and the map switch was a real benefit.

Hi Jeffro

What I was referring to on the 350 was pretty specific, that the spring rates were way too soft for my 200lb weight. There is also a valving issue on the 2012 bikes that causes the fork to ride a little low in the stroke. Both of these issues contribute of a little instability in the sand.

I am currently racing the 500xcw, with a Trail Tricks fork and I am doing very well with it. The frames are basically the same between both bikes. So I don't see any inherit issues on stability, the fork just needs a little help.

Another tip on these bikes is to shorten the shock to gain stability. I was considering it, but so far have not felt the need to do so once I had the correct spring rates front and rear (7.6/.46)

Thanks
Chilly

Chilly, I am considering this for my next bike but one thing you mention makes me nervous - that you felt good everywhere except on a whooped sand road (our trails are mostly sand). I had a very hard time with my previous KTM's (2005 300 exc and 2006 250XCW) on sand due to stability issues, especially in turns even with suspension work. Sorry if this is a stupid question; but is this a weakness of the PDS design or something that could easily be dialed out? I didn't realize how unstable these bikes were until I got my gas gas. If the PDS is still inherently unstable in sand there is no way I will go back to KTM. thanks

Good job guys. Been following with interest. If this route is where I think it is ( between BOLA and Punta San Fracisquito) I've read a couple of reports of riders making it through, but very difficult. We expect a full report when you get back Chilly.

Hey Chilly,

Buying parts online certainly has changed for the better.

I've got to give my local KTM dealer (KTM Newcastle) a shout out here. I just got a tool belt, a mud disc and a lift stand (three separate buys over 4mths) and they were cheaper than or equal to the online price.

I walked in talked to the staff, got some good advice and walked out with the parts (and an unhappy wife).

Ah, the joys of motorcycle ownership..poor but happy!
